Treatment of Prolapse of Rectum with Acupuncture Combined with TCM Drugs in 38 Cases

Prolapse of rectum is usually seen in children and senior citizens. By means of acupuncture combined with TCM drugs, the authors have treated 38 cases of the disorder, and achieved good therapeutic effects. This is reported as follows.
Clinical Data
Of the 38 cases in this series, 20 cases were male and 18 female, ranging from 6 to 70 years in age. Of them, 12 cases aged 6-10 years, 22 cases 50-70 years, and only 4 cases 10-50 years.
Therapeutic Methods
1. Acupuncture: Changqiang (GV 1), Baihui (GV 20), Zusanli (ST 36), Chengshan (BL 57), and the eight-liao points (bilateral BL 31, BL 32, BL 33 and BL 34) were electrically stimulated with the retaining of needles for 20 minutes. A plum-blossom needle was used to prick the external sphincters around the anus.
2. Medication: Proper amount of cicada slough (with the head, feet and wings removed) was ground into powder for use. The prolapsed anus was washed with alum water. Then, dust the cicada slough powder on to the prolapsed anus and push it inside the body. The patients were asked to lie laterally for 1–2 hours. Five treatments made a course. Generally, the illness could be cured after 2 courses of treatment.
Results of Treatment
Of the 38 cases treated, 35 cases (93%) were cured, and 3 cases (7%) improved.
Summary
Prolapse of rectum usually occurs in the children with insufficient qi and blood, in the elders with declined qi and blood or deficiency of qi in the middle jiao (burner), in the women who made qi exhausted during labor resulting in deficiency of qi and blood, and in those with chronic diarrhea, habitual constipation and long-standing cough. All these may cause sinking of qi in middle jiao and induce the disorder. Therefore, in treating the disorder, the primary causes should also be treated simultaneously. (Translated by Chen Zhengqiu)
